After school she studied German at the Goethe Institüt in Bonn, and then went on to study dramatic arts at the University of Pretoria where she obtained her Bachelor’s (BA) degree in drama. She later completed her licentiate in performing arts at the Akademie vir Dramakuns (ADK). As a student she was introduced to various South African artists, such as Jannie du Toit (not related), Christa Steyn and Lucas Maree, who played a great role in her development as a young performing artist. Her voice coach, Ansa du Toit (Fourie), entered her in the South African national TV singing competition “Debuut ‘89”, which launched her into her singing career in 1989.
Career[edit]
Marié du Toit first entered the South African music industry when she won a national SABC television competition, “Debuut ‘89”[1] in 1989, and launched her debut album “Hier is ek” with Decibel Musiek the following year, featuring songs like “Die Boere maak weer musiek”, “Glo my” and “Geel Madeliefies”.
In the early 90s, Marié recorded her second solo album “In Transito” and collaborated with veteran artists, Jannie du Toit and Christa Steyn, in the production “Skadus teen die Muur”[2][3], directed by Stephan Bouwer[4]. Her one-woman show, “Marié sings Brecht/Eisler” also directed by Stephan Bouwer, was performed in English, Afrikaans, Dutch and German.
In 1994, Marié joined PACOFS in Bloemfontein, where she spent two years working under director Gerben Kamper as a full-time actress and singer, performing in productions such as "Blomtyd is Bloeityd", "Slegs vir almal" and "Luc". In 1996, Marié joined the Gospel music industry. She recorded two Gospel solo CDs, “Op Pad” and “Maak oop die deur” for Maranatha Records, and became a pioneer of Afrikaans Gospel Cabaret with her one woman show “Oppad sonder bagasie”.
Her other Gospel stage productions include “A Closer Walk” with Wanda Bam, “The Bride” with Johan Kelber , and “Discarded Light” with Drini Botha.
In 2002 Marié joined the production team of BybelMedia, where she coached actors for various multi-lingual video recordings. She later co-ordinated and directed the TV magazine programme “Soeklig Gastehuis” for CNW.
In 2004 she created “Koeksister and Kalbas”, a cabaret which she performed alongside Alwena van der Vyver, and later directed the one-woman show “Hallelujas in my Hangkas” which she wrote and compiled for Alwena.
Throughout her career as performing artist, Marié was also involved at various schools where she taught drama, music appreciation and arts-and-culture to students of various age groups.
Marié created the voice of "Tumi" for Global Recordings Network Southern Africa. She also plays the voice of "Kevin" in the production "Lisa en Maats" for Cape Pulpit.
She is currently freelancing as a performer, song writer, script writer, and as a voice artist for Folio Online in Cape Town, South Africa.
