Maria Teresa Giaveri (Nibbiano, 22 February 1944) is an Italian writer, translator and scholar.[1].

Biography[edit]

Maria Teresa Giaveri was a student of Luigi de Nardis. After graduating in Literature and Philosophy at the University of Milan, she devoted herself to an intense activity as researcher and translator in the field of European literature (especially French poetry) of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Her academic activity began in 1970, at the Gabriele d'Annunzio University in Pescara, as Professor of French Language and Literature, a position she later held at the University of Naples "L'Orientale", and at the University of Pisa "La Sapienza" (until 1982).

From 1994 to 1997 she worked at the University of Messina, as Full Professor of French Language and Literature. She came back to Naples from 1997 to 2008, as Full Professor of Comparative Literature, always at "L'Orientale" (Faculty of Letters and Philosophy); in 2008 she got tenure of Comparative Literature at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Turin[2] and she taught there until 2015. In her long academic career, she often worked together with foreign institutes: from 2002 to 2004 she gave a series of lectures, as professeur invité, at the Sorbonne in Paris.

From 1981 to 2003 she developed a successful “Writing Atelier” for students at the Universities of Naples and Milan.

She also held several university courses about translation in the publishing field: at the University of Milan in 1984-85, obtaining the collaboration of the major Milanese publishing houses; in 2004 and 2005 she lectured the course "Il Traduttore Letterario", promoted by the Campania Region and the University "L'Orientale" of Naples.

After years of studies and publications about Paul Valéry, in 2014 she published Opere Scelte (Selected Works) for Meridiani Mondadori[3]. Maria Teresa Giaveri collects in this book the best of the verse and prose works of this great poet. She also creates, as a translator, some remarkable metric versions.

Again for Meridiani, she translated the work of the French writer Colette: Romanzi e racconti (Novels and short stories), Mondadori, 2000[4]

As a researcher, she was passionate about the comparison between literature and other arts (painting, music, architecture). She wrote brilliant essays about this topic, such as “Dans la forêt sonore, Debussy e l'esperienza parnassiana” (Dans la forêt sonore, Debussy and the Parnassian experience), Giavieri et al., Claude Debussy, Milan, Unicopli 1989; “Borges and Dante, Giavieri et al., Lectura Dantis, Edizioni dell'Università "L'Orientale", 2001; “Il viso, il naso: fra Marcel Proust e Murasaki Shikibu” (The face, the nose: between Marcel Proust and Murasaki Shikibu), Giavieri et al., La scrittura e il volto, Napoli, Liguori 2006.

As a journalist she worked together with RAI (the national public broadcasting company of Italy) for many years, and she also wrote on the cultural insertions of Corriere della Sera.
