Marinos Skordilis
The Skordilis (Greek: Σκορδίλης) family is a Cretan family said to be descended from Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos (Latinized: Alexios I Komnenos, Greek: Αλέξιος Α Κομνηνός),.[1][2][3] and were at one stage rulers of Crete.
Origin[edit]
According to later tradition, Emperor Alexios II Komnenos sent twelve noble Byzantine families to Crete, in order to strengthen the ties between the island and Constantinople. The families were credited important land and administrative privileges. Marinos Skordilis was one of those 12 Byzantine rulers.[4]
Large areas of Crete were attributed to each of those families. Sfakia was attributed to Marinos Skordilis. [5] (Greek: Σφακιά) in Skordilo [6] (Greek: Σκόρδιλο).
Their prominent position and privileges survived during the Venetian dominion of Crete as they were part of the "privilegiati" (Greek: Αρχοντορωμαίοι). From Marinos Skordilis was created the surname Marinakis.
During the Venetian dominion and after the Ottoman conquest of the island of Crete (1669 AD) many of the Skordilis moved to the Corsica. In Corsica Marinakis hade been translated in Marinacci [7] [8]
