Mark Allen Group is a privately-owned, media communications business. The group now publishes 65 magazines and organises 200 conferences/events and 10 large exhibitions a year. It employs 365 people in four separate offices: Herne Hill, Dartford, Wiltshire and Guildford. The group is involved in healthcare, dentistry, education and social care, manufacturing and engineering, music and leisure.

History[edit]

The company was established on 5th April 1985 following a management buy-out by Mark Allen from Thomson International Publishing. He set up office in Lavender Hill, south London, with three staff and with two journals: the British Journal of Hospital Medicine, and The Physician (now suspended).[1] Over recent years the company has undergone significant expansion thanks to a series of acquisitions of individual publications or entire business. These are as follows:

- In April 1993, a Mark Allen Group publication, the British Journal of Health Medicine, hosted an Eating Disorders conference. Diana, Princess of Wales delivered a keynote speech at the event, calling for more help and understanding for sufferers.[2]

- In May 2006 Mark Allen Group acquired Gastrointestinal Nursing from the RCN Publishing company.

- In June 2007 Mark Allen Group acquired the Journal of Wound Care from Emap International Limited.

- Between June 2010 and October 2011 Mark Allen Group acquired Independent Nurse, HR Magazine and Children & Young People Now from Haymarket Media Group.[3]

- In February 2013 Mark Allen Group acquired Jazzwise, the UK’s biggest-selling monthly jazz magazine.[4]

- Also in February 2013, Mark Allen Group completed the acquisition of two veterinary journals from Wiley-Blackwell: Companion Animal, and Livestock.[5]

- In September 2013, Mark Allen Group acquired PrintWeek and Nursery World from Haymarket Media Group.[6]

- In November 2013, Mark Allen Group acquired the classical music magazine, Gramophone (magazine), from Haymarket Media Group.[7]

- In 2014, Mark Allen Group participated in the National Council for the Training of Journalists’ scheme, ‘Training Matters’, providing apprenticeships to trainee journalists. Other companies to take part included the BBC, Telegraph Media Group, Sky Sports News, and Archant Kent.[8]

- In April 2014 Mark Allen Group acquired Brixton based, B2b publisher Findlay Media taking the companies annual turnover above the £25 million mark.[9]

- In February 2015, Mark Allen Group acquired the world music magazine Sonlgines (magazine), increasing the companies presence in the music publishing sector.[10]

- In September 2015, Mark Allen Group acquired Optican magazine from Reed Business Information[11]

- In December 2015, Mark Allen Group acquired the dental publishing business George Warman. The aquisition added magazines The Dentist, Dental Therapy Update, DCP update and Orthodontics Update to Dental Nursing which was already published by Mark Allen.[12]

- In May 2017,Mark Allen Group acquired the Uk's largest special education needs show, the TES SEN Show, from TES Global Ltd[13]

- In June 2017, Mark Allen Group expanded its business-to-business portfolio with the takeover of Unity Media, an independent publishing business in Kent. As a result of the deal the Mark Allen Group acquired Roofing, Cladding & Insulation magazine, Glass & Glazing magazine, Heating & Plumbing Monthly, Building Products magazine and Your Build magazine. They also took on the organisation of the annual RCI Show.[14]

- In November 2017, Mark Allen Group expanded its social care portfolio with the acquisition of Comms Business from Reed Business Information[15]

Awards[edit]

In 2017 MAG was ranked 46th in the Sunday Times HSBC International Track 200 for mid-market, privately owned companies which have grown overseas sales the fastest.[16]

According to 1000 COMPANIES TO INSPIRE BRITAIN 2017, produced by the London Stock Exchange Group, the Mark Allen Group is one of the most dynamic companies in the country representing all sectors.[17]
