Marko Francišković, 2018.

Marko Francišković [mārkɔɪ frʌntsī:ʃkɔɪvīːch] born in Karlovac in 1970. is a Croatian writer, veteran of Croatian Homeland war of independence, and an anti-Zionist and euroskeptic activist.

Education, military experience and activism[edit]

He got his masters in economics at the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Zagreb in 1998. After serving regular draft service in Yugoslav People's Army from 1989 to 1990, he volunteered into Croatian arms service and is veteran of Croatian Homeland war of independence from 1991 to 1995. In 2006 he published his first book Hrvatska knjiga opstanka,[citation needed] in which he opposed Zionist[clarification needed] policies, interest rate banking system, Croatian membership in the European Union and NATO and the new world order. In 2012 Marko was amongst the leaders of the heavily censored anti-EU protest where he was arrested along with Natko Kovčević, Dražen Keleminec and Ivan Pernar for intending to remove the illegally raised EU flag from the pole on Zagreb's main square.[1] Marko ran for mayor of Zagreb in 2013.[2]

Arrest in 2013 and forced psychiatric treatment[edit]

In August 2013 Marko Francišković posted a reply to a Facebook post someone wrote to the Croatian Minister of the Interior Ranko Ostojić in which he called the minister a criminal and a British agent. In a later post he described a dream he had in which he hanged Ranko Ostojić from a pole on Zagreb's main square where Marko was arrested in 2012.

A day and a half later, the police searched the apartment, arrested Francišković and imprisoned him for what turned out to be nine months. The police found leftover war weapons in the apartment (that are altogether illegal to own in Croatia) and deemed Francišković to be "dangerous". The dream Francišković described was labeled a "threatening dream" and Marko was submitted to a psychiatric evaluation where he was diagnosed by doctor Anica Biško as a "paranoid schizophrenic" after which he was sent to forced psychiatric treatment where he was "treated" with the controversial anti-psychotic Zyprexa.

During his imprisonment Francišković kept a journal which he later published as his second book.

Because of his activism, Francišković's case was covered by some online media outlets, though it was heavily spinned.[citation needed][3] Due to the support he received from the public, and social media posts that publicized the case, Francišković managed to get a second psychiatric evaluation which contradicted the first diagnosis and consequently led to Francišković's release.
