Maryam Noroozian

Maryam Noroozian (born July 19, 1962), is an Iranian neurologist, and expert in dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.[1] She is currently a professor of Neurology at Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) and the founder and director of Memory and Behavioral Neurology Division which was established for the first time in Iran in 2004.[2] She organized the First International Congress on Alzheimer's disease in Iran in 2005 and was involved in the pilot study of 10/66 project of Alzheimer Disease International (ADI) in her country.

In addition she has been involved in development of residency program in Geriatric Medicine at TUMS in Iran since 2011 and conceptualization of “Elder Abuse and Undue Influence” by the presence in the Board of Directors of Iranian Legal Medicine Organization. Moreover she has recently established the Center of Excellence in Neurological and Cognitive Disorders in the Elderly (Yaadmaan).

Considering the insufficient and scattered scientific findings in Dementia Research in illiterate old people, she has focused her studies on neuropsychological aspects of illiteracy in normal aging, Mild Cognitive Impairment and different types of Dementia including AD in Iranian old population based on a cross-cultural approach. Dr. Noroozian has had the main role in the development a network among professionals in academic circles and enrichment the physicians’ knowledge and interest in the field of Geriatrics, Behavioral Neurology and Dementia in Iran. Meanwhile her team has been the main scientific resource for academic centers in Iran in whole aspects of Dementia including research in neuroscience to public awareness about this devastating disorder.

Early life and education[edit]

Maryam Noroozian (born July 28, 1341 in Khomein, Iran), lived in Sari from the age of three to the end of her high school. The year of her high school graduation was coincided with the Cultural Revolution in Iran (1979) resulting closed universities all across the nation. She married Behnam Khosravi in that time and her first child (son named Nima) was born in 1983. Two years later she started her Doctor of Medicine degree at Tehran University of Medical Sciences, the largest, and most highly-ranked medical university of Iran. She graduated in 1992 and followed it by a neurology specialty that ended in 1997 with her being first rank in the 44th National Board of Neurology exam.

Professional Career[edit]

Dr. Maryam Noroozian is a faculty member of Roozbeh Psychiatric Hospital in Tehran University of Medical Sciences since 1997 to date. Since the founding of the Alzheimer's Association of Iran in 2002, she has been the head of the scientific committee of this association. Dr. Norouzian, established the first memory clinic in Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 2003. In 2004, she established the Department of Memory and behavioral neurology established the Roozbeh Hospital. Dr. Norouzian has been referred to the WHO by Iran as the most respected health scientist.
