Masayoshi Nakatani (中谷正義, born March 8, 1989)[2] is a Japanese former professional boxer who competed from 2011 to 2019. He held the WBC-OPBF lightweight title from 2014 to 2019.
History[edit]
Masayoshi is from Shinto Mikuni Elementary School in Osaka City and Higashi Mikuni Junior High School in Osaka City. In junior high school he started boxing at Apollo Yoshio's gym. He participated in a national tournament at Ikoku High School together with Issho Ioka, Ryo Miyazaki, Yuta Uetani, and Yusoo Okayama, and was called the "Five People of Okukoku."[3]
On June 12, 2011, he competed with Katsuhisa Shiokawa in the Matsushita IMP Hall, winning TKO in the forth round, and won his debut victory.
On January 11, 2014, he competed with OPBF Oriental Pacific Lightweight Champion Yoshitaka Kato at Korakuen Hall and won by decision, winning the OPBF Oriental Pacific Lightweight Champion belt.[4] On February 5, he was elected a monthly MVP of the East Japan Boxing Association.[5]
He made his first ring appearance outside of Japan July 19th 2019, where he lost Teófimo López by decision.[6][7]
On September 27, 2019, he announced his retirement on Twitter[4][8]
