Material World is an early-stage American e-commerce company and high-end clothing reseller based on Brooklyn, New York.[1] It was founded in February 2012 by Jie Zheng, a Chinese citizen, and Rie Yano, from Japan. Material World was started by Rie Yano and Jie Zheng, who met at Harvard Business School and launched the company in December 2011 after both worked in the fashion e-commerce space at companies such as Coach, Ralph Lauren, and J.Crew. Initially purely a trade-in service company where customers can earn upfront fashion credit to shop at retailers such as Saks, Nordstroms, Intermix and Barneys, it later launched a personalized subscription service to help customers both discover and sell pre-owned designer pieces as a one-stop online destination. [2] It has been since covered by The New York Times, ABC News, Forbes Japan, and Glamour Magazine. [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]

Funding[edit]

In December 2012, [[Material World raised $780,000 in funding, led by Great Oaks VC.[8] In March 2016, the company received an additional $9 million in financing from an undisclosed Japanese e-commerce company. [9]

Awards And Honors[edit]

Material World appeared on the cover of Forbes Japan’s June 2016 edition [10], and Material World CEO and Co-Founder Rie Yano was named as one of the top “Forbe’s List of 55 Female Activists” from Japan making international impact [11]. Yano was chosen as the “Time 100 Most Influential People” by Japan Times in 2015 for her impact in global entrepreneurship. Material World also won a $100K Grand Prix Prize in the 2015 Development Bank of Japan Female Entrepreneurs Business Competition for a sustainable approach to driving business to the fashion industry worldwide. Founders Yano and Zheng were featured in the The New York Times Sunday cover page story in 2016 as disruptors in the age of consignment [12], and recognized by Glamour in 2013 as women to watch in retail [13].
