Maymay

Maymay is a phonetic spelling of a common mispronunciation of the word meme[1] , and is typically in the context of internet memes. "Maymay" is largely used ironically and satirically in various online communities to mock mainstream Internet culture and those oblivious to it, attempting to 'fit in'.

On January 5th, 2009, YouTuber, ThatsErapProductions uploaded a video titled "Top 10 Internet Memes and Phenomena - listverse lists" on YouTube, in which he pronounces the word "meme" as "may-may", claiming "I know meme is pronounced "meam", but i like to say maymay".

 

The use of the spelling spread in online forums. On March 11th, 2009, a Newgrounds forum user submitted a post titled "How do you pronounce 'meme?'" to which a user replied that he pronounced the term as "may may". On September 2nd an IGN user submitted a thread titled "Am I the only one who pronounces 'meme' like 'may-may'?" Over the next several years, additional IGN Forums users submitted posts about the mispronunciation.
