Biography[edit]

Meir is a descendant of an old Israeli family from Jerusalem. His grandfather and namesake was Chief Rabbi of Israel, Ben-Zion Meir Hai Ouziel. (Sometime spelled Uziel)

Meir was born in Tripoli, Libya, while his father Jacob was serving as an officer in the British army. His family returned to land of Israel when Meir was one and a half years old. His mother was born in Benghazi; her father was a British subject and head of the Jewish community in Tripoli, and her mother a descendant of an old Jewish family from Livorno in Italy.

Meir was raised in Tel Aviv.

At the age of 14, Meir's family moved to Kibbutz Netzer Sereni. After his military service, Meir was a graphic artist and owner of a graphic studio in Tel Aviv. At the age of 27 he became a graphic editor and illustrator in the Israeli newspaper, Maariv. In 1974 he began publishing a satirical\personal column titled "Shipudim" (Skewers), and in 1978 he was appointed an editor in Maariv.

In 1997, Meir Ouziel founded and was chief editor of the newspaper Makor Rishon (First Source).

Journalism[edit]

Ouziel's weekly personal column, "Shipudim" (Hebrew: שיפודים, Skewers) was published in the Maariv weekend edition since 1974. Meir's writing was humorist-satirizing, known for its political criticism written from Meir's unique point of view. In a subsection of Shipudim, called "Pinat Ha'shlulit," Meir published stories of love and disappointment between "Princesses and Frogs," many of which were written by his readers. Shipudim was published in Maariv for nearly 40 years, until 2014, with a few years break during which it was published in Makor Rishon. Currently Meir Ouziel publishes a personal column in Maariv, each Sunday, and various political articles. Meir was chief editor of "Kriat Beinaim", a supplement for young readers, which was published in Maariv every Monday in the eighties and nineties. "Kriat Beinaim" was written for young people, and hosted young and significant Israeli writers.

Literary and Artistic Work[edit]

Meir Ouziel has published satirical works as well as full length novels, in a style described by himself as "true and fantastical past." Among his novels are: "A little place with Debby" (Modan Publishing House); "From the bottom of my puddle"  (Modan Publishing House); and "Whatever seems right" (Totem Publishing House). Meir has also written a biographical novel "The first at the land of Zion" (Am Oved & Yad Ben Zvi), on his grandfather Chief Rabbi Ben-Zion Meir Hai Ouziel. In 2000, this book was awarded the "Zeev" prize for children and youth literature.[1]

In 1999 Meir launched "Bimat Mofaey HaSifrut" a series of stage shows presenting literary pieces edited and directed by him, with the participation of some of Israel's leading actors, and enacted in many of Israels biggest theaters including Tsavta, The Cameri and Beit Avi Chai.

Radio and Television[edit]

In the 1970ies Meir Ouziel hosted the television cultural show, "Shmone Vahetzi" (Eight and a Half), and took part in various game and satirical shows on television and in the radio. Ouziel created television series on dramatic and historical subjects, such as the Jewish underground movement in Israel under the British role, Jewish heroism in World War II, and Jewish resistance to the Nazis.

Diplomatic and public activities[edit]

In addition to his roles in the media, Ouziel also worked as a diplomat and headed various public activities:

1986 – 1989: Head of the Jewish Agency branch in Italy. In this capacity Meir assisted in the Jewish repatriation from Russia to Israel.

1994 – 1996: Head of Keren Hayesod (United Jewish Appeal) in Italy.

Ouziel was a founder of the "March of the Living" even coining the title. This title is a counter weight to the "Death Marches," the forcible movement and massacres of Jewish prisoners by the Nazis from the concentration camps in Europe.

Ouziel was a member of the managing committee of the Hebrew Writers Association in Israel, and of the Mifal HaPais Council for the Culture and Arts. Currently he is the artistic director of the Hebrew Writers Association in Israel.

Personal[edit]

Meir Ouziel resides in Tel Aviv, and is married, since 1968, to Ruth  (née Stecklmacher). He is the father of three sons: Ohad, Dadan, and Eyar, and grandfather to Liam, Adam, Hillel, and Avigail.
