Milan Jovanović Batut
Dr. Milan Jovanović Batut (Serbian Cyrillic: Милан Јовановић Батут; Sremska Mitrovica, 10 October 1847 - Belgrade, Serbia, Kingdom of Yugoslavia, 11 September 1940) was a renowned Serbian and Montenegrin physician and medical writer.[1]
Education[edit]
After completing his medical studies and training in the Medical School of the University of Vienna, he went abroad to study in Germany, a leading nation in modern medicine at the time. In Berlin, he worked at the Reichgesundheitsamt, the Department of Health led by the world-renowned microbiologist Robert Koch. In Munich, he was an assistant to Max Joseph von Pettenkofer at the Institute of Hygiene and attended lectures at Ludwig Maximilian University. Then he went to France, to study and train in Paris with Louis Pasteur, the leading French bacteriologist. Upon his return to Serbia, he was appointed professor of hygiene and forensic medicine at the University of Belgrade, then known as Visoka škola[2]
Legacy[edit]
The DR. MILAN JOVANOVIC - BATUT" INSTITUT ZA JAVNO ZDRAVLjE SRBIJE is named after him. The institute is located in Belgrade (Savski Venac) in Serbia and is part of the Other Ambulatory Health Care Services Industry.[3]
