Overview[edit]

General information[edit]

The full name for this festival is: the Intercultural Meeting Manifestation Milan. It was held in 1985 for the first time and was organised by the Hindustani community in The Hague. "Milan" in the title means "greeting" in Hindi. It was meant to be a commemoration day of "Milan ke Din", or Meeting day, which refers to the Hindustani populations's arrival in the Netherlands[1]. The festival is still being held and attracts about 70 000 visitors per year, mostly from the Hindustani population[2]. The festival is normally held in the summer period, between June and August, in the Zuiderpark in The Hague[3].

Historical background[edit]

The idea behind the festival is to commemorate the arrival of Hindustani-immigrants from Surinam in the Netherlands.[1] Originating in 1983, Hindustani members of Stichting voor Surinamers wanted to commemorate specific meaningful days (e.g. 5th of June that is Immigration Day, etc.). In the beginning, the festival included political information, also food, sports, and games[4]

Aim[edit]

The Milan Summer Festival seeks to provide a multicultural platform and establish a meeting place for all citizens of Surinamese descent. The aim is to foster identity formation of ethnic cultural groups and encourage mutual acceptance and understanding.[1]

Activities[edit]

Apart from musical acts, the festival offers cooking and dancing workshops as well as physical activities like football competitions and walking tours[5]. Additionally the "Kinderland" provides activities for children during the whole period of the festival[6]. Every year people who significantly contributed to society are awarded with the "Milan Summer Festival Award" in a ceremony at the festival.[7]
