As of October 2018, Morten Bay is a research fellow at The Center for the Digital Future at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism...[1]

Scholarship and research[edit]

Bay’s academic work has centered around social media, emergent media, online journalism, pop culture on the Internet as well as policy and ethics questions related to technology and cybersecurity at the national or global level. In 2018, his exploration of political agitation through trolling in the Star Wars fan community on Twitter drew attention from national and international media, due to the discovery of what appeared to a small number of Russian political influence operators among the accounts studied.[1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]

Bay has also published a number of articles, both in academic journals and in popular media, pertaining to the early history of the Internet. At the Danish Union of Journalist’s annual conference in 2012 he presented the first clips from a documentary film he was making on the subject [8]. There has been no announcement of completion of this project.

Authorship[edit]

In 2005, Bay and colleague Julie Ralund conducted a large qualitative study of teen media habits in Scandinavia. The results were conveyed in Generation Netværk from 2006. [9] [10]. Bay and Ralund both received the Future Award from the Danish Academy of Strategic Foresight for their work [11] [12]

In 2009, Bay published Homo Conexus from 2009, an exploration of concepts of social media as a facilitator of social networking, social production, connectionism, actor-network theory and network effects. [13] [14] . An English translation was released in 2012. A third book, Welcome to Computopia was published in 2014. [15]

Journalistic Work[edit]

As of June 2019, Morten Bay contributes to a number of U.S.-based media outlets such as Slate[16] and Motherboard [17] as well as the Danish newspaper Politiken [18]
