Cornelius A. Pratt known professionally as Mr. CAP, is an American rapper from Houston, Texas.[1]. He is a long-time member of the South Park Coalition (SPC) [2] [3]and released his debut album 2 Tha Grave on April 5, 2011[4]

Early life and education[edit]

Mr. CAP was born on April 5, 1973 as Cornelius A. Pratt in Houston, Texas. His parents, Cornelius Pratt and Brenda Greer, are both musicians. He was raised on the south side of Houston in the urban community of South Park. He graduated from Jack Yates Senior High School in Houston's Third Ward in 1992.[2]

Growing up in a musical family placed an 8-year-old Cornelius on stage as the opening act for The Greer Brothers[2][5], a funk ensemble comprised of his uncles known for their controversial song We Don't Dig No Busing. He is also the nephew of blues great Johnny "Guitar" Watson[2][6]

His stage name, CAP, is the moniker given to him by his parents[2] as they figured out how to name Baby Boy Pratt after his father, Cornelius, without making him a junior.[citation needed]

After a brief prison stint, Mr. CAP earned an Associate's Degree in Computer Network Engineering and studied Computer Science at The University of Houston, leading to a brief career with several Fortune 500 companies.

Music Career[edit]

1988-1992 From Funky to Funky-Fresh[edit]

While attending Jack Yates Senior High School, Mr. CAP formed his first rap group, The Raise Up Posse, with high school friends Darryl J. Fontenot (Texas Tech of the South Park Coalition)[4] and Ronnie Bernard (Ron-E, a solo performer). This decision helped catapult him from the nephew of funk band The Greer Brothers to an artist making his own way. It also put him on the radar of K-Rino, the founder of South Park Coalition[2][7] . However, the group disbanded in late 1992 when Mr. CAP was sentenced to prison for an undisclosed offense. Mr. CAP is an active, recording member of SPC[7]

Released from Prison in 1994: Free to Create[edit]

After his 1994 release from prison, Mr. CAP returned to music and performing. He joined forces with O.N.E. (Black One of the Screwed Up Click aka S.U.C). Mr. CAP and O.N.E. produced their first collaboration under the record label O.N.E. 4 Da Money in 2004.

 2005 – present: Renewed Focus and 2 Da Grave[edit]

With a degree in Computer Network Engineering[citation needed] and no record deal, Mr. CAP focused his attention to the business and technology side of music[4], founding the digital distribution company, CAP Distributions – streamlining the process for new artists to make their music available for sale across the world through popular online merchants.

At 38 years old, Mr. CAP released his debut album 2 Tha Grave[4] on CAP Records. The album, which featured Point Blank, Kevin D'Rell, Mo'Lew, Ms.Red, O.N.E., Bryce, Bosey-B, Cassy, Dirt Figaz, J-Smoove and YNG Robb, boasted head banging hits from Thug Rap to Gangsta Rap to Hardcore Hip-Hop and Screw Music.

In 2015, Houston media outlets and rap fans attempted to create controversy between Mr. CAP and Wiz Kalifa, who uses the Instagram handle @mrcap.[2][6]
