Multicultural Music Fellowship (MCMF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit in the San Francisco Bay Area, founded in 1989 to sponsor and promote musical programs that feature the harp. Initially founded to sponsor the Festival of Harps concert series, the organization now sponsors and promotes the Bay Area Youth Harp Ensemble and the Mission Harp Ensemble.

Festival of Harps[edit]

Between 1989 and 2009 the MCMF sponsored the Festival of Harps, an annual concert series and educational outreach program that featured harpists from different countries and cultures.[1] The festival began with a few shows in San Francisco, and over the course of three decades expended to venues throughout Northern California.[2][3][4] The World Festival of Harps was an offshoot from the festival focused on world music, holding performances in venues across the United States between 2001 and 2003.

The festival produced the compilation albums Festival of Harps Live! (1996),[5] Harpestry (1997)[6], and Celtic Harpestry (1998)[7]. Celtic Harpestry inspired a Public Broadcast Station (PBS) special by the same name, filmed in Lismore Castle, Ireland.[8]

In 1999, San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown declared November 14th the Festival of Harps day.[9]

Bay Area Youth Harp Ensemble[edit]

Since 1999 the MCMF has sponsored the Bay Area Youth Harp Ensemble (BAYHE). The ensemble is comprised of young harpists who perform Celtic, Latin, and contemporary harp music in venues across the Bay Area[10][11][12]. Under the sponsorship of MCMF the ensemble has released the book Lily's Treasures (2004)[13] and the albums Music From Around the World (2005)[14] and Innisheer (2014).[15]

During the summer of 2016 the BAYHE performed a series of concerts in Humboldt County to raise awareness of the need to protect the remaining old growth redwood trees and forests for future generations.[16][17][18][19][20] Music videos for the songs "Bay Tree", "Dialog with a Brook", and "Into The Forest" were filmed during the tour and were released in the spring of 2017.[21]

Mission Harp Ensemble[edit]

Since 2006 the MCMF has sponsored the Mission Harp Ensemble (MHE)[22]. The ensemble offers free harp classes to Latino children in San Francisco’s Mission district that focus on the folkloric harp styles of Latin America.[23] The MHE was founded with the mission of offering Latino children the opportunity to study the harp in a positive and nurturing environment.
