Murat Karahan, (born May 7, 1977) is an operatic tenor from Ankara, Turkey.

Early life and musical training[edit]

Karahan, was one of two children. Although both of his parents are Turkish-born, his grandparents were born in Kazakhstan; in later years he would perform at Astana Opera in Kazakhstan. During Karahan’s formative years, he dreamed of being a politician like his uncle. Karahan's uncle, İsmet Sezgin, was Turkey’s deputy Prime Minister and other high-ranking government positions. Musically, both of Karahan’s parents, Nurser (née Sezgin) and Süleyman Karahan, were also singers.

Karahan attended the TED Ankara College Foundation Schools for his primary and secondary studies graduating in 1995. In 1996, he enrolled at Bilkent University in Ankara, as a student in the Music and Performing Arts department. While attending Bilkent University, he worked with state artists Suna Korad and Professor Pekin Kırgız and in 2003, and received his bachelor’s degree. In that same year, Karahan became a soloist at the Ankara State Opera and Ballet and began his graduate studies at Bilkent University. As a graduate student, he continued to train with Professor Pekin Kırgız and the Ankara State Opera's Principal Stage Manager, Gürçil Çeliktaş. In 2005 he completed his Master’s degree and began to earn his doctorate in musical arts.

In 2009, Italian Conductor, Marco Berdondini, invited Karahan to study at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, in Rome, Italy where he was a special student of soprano, Renata Scotto and Santa Cecilia's then- president, Bruno Cagli, for two years. While attending Santa Cecilia, Karahan also worked intensively with Anna Vandi and Cesare Scarton. Upon invitation from the Academy, Murat sung the role of Count Libenskof in Rossini’s Il Viaggio a Reims, led by conductor Kent Nagano. In 2010 Karahan graduated with his Ph.D. in Musical Arts from his alma mater, followed by a performance in the opera, Rossini’s Fatih Sultan Mehmet (also known as Maometto II), staged by Yekta Kara on the opening night of the first International Istanbul Opera Festival.[1]

Professional career[edit]

In 2012, Karahan became a resident artist at the Latvian National Opera during his residency, he performed over 40 operatic and concert works including Lucia di Lammermoor, La traviata, La bohème, the International Riga Opera Festival, and their New Year’s concert as a guest artist. [2] In February of 2013, Karahan once again sang the lead tenor role in Lucia di Lammermoor produced by Latvian National Opera, but this time, staged at the world-famous Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Russia. [3] That same year, he debuted in France performing lead tenor roles in Il trovatore and Manon Lescaut (Puccini) at Opéra de Reims and Opéra-Théâtre de Limoges. In January 2015, Karahan made his début at theDeutsche Oper Berlin in La Traviata. Upon returning to the Bolshoi in 2015, Karahan performed the lead tenor roles in La Traviata, La Boheme, and Carmen. In 2016, he took part in the open air opera festival, Arena di Verona as Manrico in Il Trovatore, staged by Franco Zeffirelli and conducted by Maestro Daniel Oren. Additionally, Karahan performed at the Parma Verdi Festival, Macerata Opera Festival, and a return to Deutsche Oper Berlin in Il Trovatore.[4]

In 2017, he continued to perform in top-level opera houses including his début at Oper Frankfurt in Il Trovatore, his role début as B.F. Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly at Weiner Staatsoper, Mario Cavaradossi in Tosca at Teatro Filarmonico Verona, Chevalier Des Grieux in Manon Lescaut at the Bolshoi Theatre, and performing in the Festival de Radio France et Montpellier as Vassili in Siberia (opera), and other world-class opera houses and festivals such as: Bayerische Staatsoper as Ismaele in Nabucco, Teatro di San Carlo, and the Munich Opera Festival as Ismaele in Nabucco. Karahan founded the Limak Filarmoni Orkestrasi and from October 2017 through January 2018, whilst performing operas abroad and being invited to sing for various Ambassadors, Karahan began performing concerts in Turkey followed by an eight-city tour, with the orchestra, throughout Turkey where he performed the songs of Turkish music icon, Zeki Müren.

In early January of 2018, Karahan was appointed as the General Director of the Turkish State Opera and Ballet; in Turkish the proper title is, Genel Müdüru devlet Opera ve Balesi.[5] Meanwhile, he returned to the Bolshoi. Originally, Karahan was scheduled to sing the role of Alfredo in La Traviata on January 19th and 21st but during the rehearsal process was asked to also sing the role of Chevalier des Grieux in Manon Lescaut, as done previously in 2017, less than a week later on January 24th and 26th, 2018. Karahan performed all four shows (two different operas by two different composers), as well as being invited as the guest of Turkey’s ambassador.
