National Hotstopper Day

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Introduction[edit]

National Hotstopper Day is an annual holiday celebrated on the 26th of April that aims to promote the use of splash sticks, which are colloquially referred to as "hotstoppers", in hot beverages, as well as increase awareness of the risks posed by insufficient protection for drinkers, who may suffer serious injuries from neglecting hotstopper usage.

Creation[edit]

The idea was first proposed by CGP Grey alongside his vice-host Brady Haran in their podcast Hello Internet. In episode 101, the hosts discuss the many different "national" days there are, including National Sibling Day & National Grilled Cheese Day. As a way of mocking the idea, Grey suggests a "National Hotstopper Day", which is a running joke in the podcast, and they both declare the day of the podcasts release as National Hotstopper Day.

Recognition[edit]

Thus far, the recognition of National Hotstopper Day has been limited to Grey and Haran’s podcast following, which has a reported download rate of 600,000 to 900,000 per episode.[1]

Hotstoppers[edit]

Hotstoppers, also know commercially as splash sticks, were first introduced by Starbucks in 2008 in order to help prevent spillages in take away hot beverages. Since then, they have become a widely used safety item in coffee shops across the world.[1] However, United Kingdoms Starbucks locations have begun limiting distribution, leading to safety activists like Grey and Haran attempting to spread awareness.[2][3]

Purpose[edit]

The purpose of National Hotstopper Day is to inform the public of dangers of scalding liquids to children, and to help raise funds for the Children’s Burn Trust, causes which Grey and Haran have advocated for since 2015.[3]
