The Nebraska-Penn State volleyball rivalry is an ongoing college women's volleyball rivalry between the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Penn State Nittany Lions.[1] Prior to 2011, the teams competed only in out-of-conference play or in the NCAA tournament, but since Nebraska joined the Big Ten in 2011, they have played at least once per year as conference opponents. NU leads the series 21–10.

History[edit | edit source]

Along with Stanford, Penn State and Nebraska are easily the most decorated college volleyball programs in the country. The Nittany Lions have won more national championships than any other program, while the Cornhuskers lead the country in all-time wins, conference titles, and All-Americans. The two schools have combined to win 9 of 12 national titles since 2006. They have played each other 11 times in the NCAA tournament, with Nebraska both hosting and winning eight of them.

Both teams have been ranked in the AVCA top 25 for 30 of their 31 meetings; both have been in the top ten for 21, including 19 straight from 1994 to 2016. Nebraska has been the higher-ranked team for 17 of the 31 matches. Thirteen of the most recent 24 matches have featured the no. 1 team in the country (Nebraska seven times, Penn State six times); these teams are 8–5.[2]

Nebraska and Penn State have combined to deliver several of the most thrilling NCAA tournament matches in recent memory.[3] In the 2008 semifinals, Nebraska took no. 1 Penn State to five sets, the first time the Lions had lost a set all season. They didn't meet again in the tournament until the 2016 regional semifinals, where underdog Penn State got to match point twice but couldn't finish off the top-seeded Cornhuskers. The following year, Nebraska defeated Penn State in a five-set thriller to advance to the national final.[4]
