Nickel Plate Road 639[edit]

NKP 639 on display in Miller Park, Bloomington IL

Nickel Plate Road 639 is a class H-6e 2-8-2 Heavy Mikado built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1923 for the Nickel Plate Road and racked up 3 million miles on the road. 639 is currently on display in Miller Park in Bloomington Illinois.[1]

1923-1959[edit]

NKP 639 was Built by Baldwin in 1923 for the Nickel Plate Road for fast freight service. 639 was assigned the Frankfort Indiana to Peoria Illinois route. In 1954, 639 developed stoker problems. Nickel Plate Road 587, a sister to 639, that was retired at the same time 639 developed stoker problems.[2] To keep 639 operational without doing any work to 639's original 22RA tender, 587's smaller 16RA tender was swapped with 639's much larger 22RA tender to keep 639 running. In 1957, after 34 years of service, 639 was retired and placed into storage in Bellevue, Ohio. In 1959, the engine was donated to the city of Bloomington Illinois after racking up 3 million miles.[3]

1959-2018[edit]

Since 639's 1959 donation to the city of Bloomington IL, she hasn't seen another chance in excursion service. Sometime between 1995 and 2018, the 639's whistle has vanished from the engine. It might be in storage so it doesn't get stolen or it might have already been stolen by someone. otherwise, 639 is structurally sound. Except for some rust and moss growing on 639, she is in good condition. most parts of 639 are all still on the engine. If 639 will run again is up to preservationists that are in the area. A group might come along sometime in the not too distant future that would want to restore 639 that would have to have enough money and time to complete the work necessary to get 639 running again, 639 will steam again. Otherwise, she will rust away in Miller Park which is located in Bloomington Illinois.
