From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Nina Manandhar is a British photographer and author.

Life and Work[edit]

Nina Manandhar was born in West London to a Nepalese father and English mother. She studied Fine Art at Chelsea College of Arts and graduated in 2003.

She began her career establishing youth arts organisation Hardcore Is More Than Music[1], together with collaborator Nendie Pinto-Duschinsky. This positioning at the grassroots of London youth culture went on to inform her later research and photographic practise.

In 2014 Prestel (Random House) published her first book What We Wore – A Peoples History of British Style. A photographic documentary of street culture and subculture from 1950-2010 through the lens of the people living it.

Naomi Attwood, writing for The Independent in 2014 said “Manandhar set out to re-contextualise familiar subcultures such as mods, rockers and soul boys, as well as more obscure style tribes, by telling people’s stories in their own words. A scroll through the reader-submitted images which document changing styles and attitudes from 1950 to the present day, is a sociological gold mine.”[2]

Rachel Cook, writing for The Guardian said “Manandhar’s book reminds the reader how pragmatic and cobbled together street fashion used to be. Turning its pages leaves you feeling wistful and nostalgic”[3]

In 2016 she was commissioned by The Photographers Gallery to become an artist in residence and to create What Soho Wore.[4] Through building an archive of peoples photography from Soho, Manandhar's intention was to map the cultural history of the areas youth movements; music, fashion, club-life, in light of the recent social changes and redevelopment in the area.[5] [6]

Beyond the UK, Manandhar has undertaken residencies and photographic commissions that explore youth identity and emerging creative networks in West Africa. In 2014 she completed a British Council funded residency in Dakar, Senegal with Les Petit Pierres[7]. In 2015 she was commissioned by the British Council to work in Lagos Nigeria as part of the Fashion DNA programme.[8]

She has produced commissioned work for Vogue, The Fader, Financial Times, Nike, Adidas, Showstudio, The British Council.

She is an Associate Lecturer at University of The Arts. She speaks regularly in public on the subjects of style, subculture and photography. She has been an invited panellist and speaker at Tate[9], Autograph ABP [10], Institute of Contemporary Arts [11], i-D Magazine, SOAS, Manchester Art Gallery.[12]
