Nishaa Upadhyay
Nishaa Upadhyay is a well-known Gujarati Singer specializing is soft, folk, semi-classical, Indi Pop and film songs. Born in Palanpur, Nishaa (also known as Nishaa Upadhyay Kapadia) was from the tutelage, trained in classical music. Due to constant musical environment in the family, Nishaa groomed to be a very good singer with a finesse in all genre of music.
Early Life: Nishaa used to do live stage shows since very tender age of six in many cities of Gujarat. She used to sing film songs, light Guajarati. Hindi, Urdu Gazals, semi classical songs. Nishaa’s renderings of difficult film gazals from Maestro like Madan Mohanjee got regular once-mores. Participating in singing competitions, youth festivals got her many awards at state level and started giving her recognitions at state level.
Recognitions and further Fame: Due to the musical passion, Nishaa decided to groom herself in classical music. Hence, she got enrolled in the famous M.S. University of Vadodara, in the Faculty of Performing arts and music. Here, she got classically trained under Shri Bapat.
Winning a state level award, in a competition named “Mehfil”, organized by ISRO, ( Indian Space Research Organization ) made the Musical Pundits of Gujarat take a serious note of this budding singer. This completion staged 3000 artists from Gujarat which got filtered to 300, then 21 and the out of 4 finalists, Nishaa came out a winner. A brainchild of Harshjit Thakkar, this competition was one of its kind wherein, as like todays Mobile voting, TV viewers were supposed to cast their votes through post cards. And there were special judges too. While inauguration of Bhuj Town hall in 1989, Nishaa performed in front of veteran Kalyanjibhai ( of the Kayanji-Anandji duo ) & Sadhna Sargam, for the first time. Kalyanjibhai noted the strength of the singer during other programs and suggested to Nishaa that she considers moving to Mumbai. Nishaa started undergoing further musical traing under Kalyanjibhai from 1992 alongwith Sadhna Sargam, Javed Ali, Sonali Vajpayee etc. She took playback singing training from Kalyanjibhai which benefitted and opened new vistas for her singing career.
Indi-pop, Garba & Movies: She soon established her name in world of Indi-pop, Film songs, TV serial songs, Gazals , Jingles for TV Commercials. She sang for the regional Indian films like Gujarati, Udiya. Bhojpuri. Marathi and Kannada, Nishaa sang with many renowned singers Shankar Mahadevan,Kumar Sanu, Mahendra Kapoor, Manhar Udhas, Sadhna Sargam ,Kavita Krishna Murthy Vinod Rathod RoopKumar Rathod She came a blue-eyed performer in almost all forms and formats of Music in Gujarat especially sugam sangeet. She introduced some memorable songs in Gujarati which gives her encore even today. Aankho ma bethela chaatak ( આંખોમાં બેઠેલા ચાતક), Daabe haathe oru saajan laapasi ( ડાબે હાથે ઓરું સાજન લાપસી) are such songs which were introduced by Nishaa, and many budding singers attempt these jewels.
Establishing as Garba Queen of Gujarat: Garba Queen Vadodara, popular for its unique Garba Festival, gave platform to Nishaa Upadhyaya under baton of Rishabh Group in year 1993 and thus started journey of Nishaa becoming a Garba Queen of Gujarat. She alongwith singers Achal Mehta & Atul Purohit, and musicians Kaushik Mistry and Vinod Ayengar went on to make a formidable team, which brought scintillating, tuneful, young garba at Vadodara platform.
