Noa (News Over Audio)[edit]

Noa is a producer, aggregator and seller of audio-journalism i.e. spoken-word narration of journalistic articles. The Company partners with global publishers such as The Financial Times, Bloomberg and The Independent, among others, to produce audio versions of their articles. Noa then aggregates these and offers them for consumption across mobile, website and smart speakers.

The company was established in Dublin in 2015[1] and now operates globally with large international publishers.

The name "Noa" (pronounced like the name Noah) was derived from an early acronym used by the company to describe their earliest objective - putting News Over Audio.[2]

History[edit]

Noa was established by Gareth Hickey, Shane Ennis, Philomena McGinley and Keith Ryan with the intention of making news more engaging.[3][4] They wanted to address the problem of people feeling overwhelmed by the constant stream of news headlines while not having the time to sit down and read journalists' articles[2]. They had a vision of Noa being a source people could "turn to in order to become fully informed about the topics that interest them, regardless of their background knowledge or a busy schedule.”[5]

MVP (v1.0)[edit]

Noa created its MVP, a mobile app, on the 2nd May 2017.[1] It used this version to prove the concept of, and demand for, audio-journalism.

Smart Speakers - Alexa[edit]

In December 2017, Noa launched an Amazon Alexa skill that allowed users to listen to audio-journalism through their smart speaker.[6]

Version 2.0[edit]

In July 2018, Noa released mobile version 2.0 on iOS and Android hailing it as a "step into a truly personalised news experience".[7]

Product[edit]

Noa's audio journalism, which is narrated by professional voice artists, is offered through a subscription based service. Content is primarily focused on analysis, opinion and thought leadership articles from its international publishers. Users can access the content across the Company's mobile, web and smart speaker platforms, where they receive personal article recommendations based on their topic interest, knowledge and learning goals.[4]
