Noha Khater

Dr. Noha Khater (born 1 November 1972, Cairo, Egypt[1]) is an Egyptian ophthalmologist and eye surgeon. She is the only retinal surgeon in Egypt,[2] and is the founder of the Almouneer eye clinics in Egypt.[3]

Early life[edit]

Noha Ibrahim El Desouky Khater was born on 1 November 1972 in Cairo, Egypt[1]. As a child, she attended Port Said Language School in Cairo. Her father was a prominent physician in the field of anesthesiology, a professor in Al Azhar University, and head of anesthesiology at El Salam International Hospital.[2]

Khater began her medical career at the age of 15 when she was enrolled in Qasr El Eyni Hospital Medical School in Cairo. She attained her Master's Degree in Ophthalmology and her PhD (specializing in diseases of the retina) from Cairo University to become Egypt's first ophthalmologist to specialize in retinal diseases.[4] Later on, Khater became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of LondonFRCOphth; alongside a specialized clinical program from The University of Texas.[4]

Career[edit]

Khater established her private clinic in 1994 in Dokki, Giza; in 2014 she changed the name of her clinic to the Almouneer Diabetic Eye-care Center, the first eye care center specialized in diabetic complications in the MENA region.[3] She is accredited by the European Vitreoretinal Society for her contribution to the advancement of vitreoretinal surgery.[5]

Since its inception, the eye centre has doubled its workforce and opened three additional branches.[6] To date, Almouneer has served over 20,000 patients across Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Yemen and Ghana through its three centers in and around Cairo.[7] It has also recently launched its research activities hoping to establish the first diabetic eye research center in the Middle East and Africa.

Khater is also a professor of ophthalmology at Cairo University.[1][8]

Philanthropy[edit]

Khater has established an NGO to advocate for the improvement of the quality of life of the diabetic through raising awareness, providing free healthcare and funding diabetes research.[6][9][10]

Recognition[edit]

In February 2018, Khater was nominated as one of the three Middle Eastern finalists for the Cartier Women's Initiative Awards.[9] Founded in 2006 by Cartier, McKinsey & Company and INSEAD Business School, the competition is open to women-run, for-profit businesses in any country and sector working to create strong social impact.[11]
