NomadBSD is a Unix-like operating system based on FreeBSD featuring a persistent live system for USB flash drives.[1][2][3] This BSD is unique as it is designed to be used as a live desktop system that works out of the box using automatic hardware detection and setup.[3]
History[edit]
On February 19, 2018, NomadBSD was first created. It is a live system running FreeBSD to boot off a USB flash drive with either BIOS or UEFI support. This lets a user test whether or not their current hardware configuration will work with FreeBSD before putting the effort into directly installing FreeBSD.[2][3] NomadBSD's unique configuration make it usable for data recovery or educational purposes.[2][3] This is one of the few "plug it in and go" solutions in the BSD world.[4]
On May 11, 2021, the team moved from FreeBSD 12.x to 13.x and changed the project's versioning scheme.[5][6][7]
Features[edit]
NomadBSD will work with multiple hardware configurations, as does FreeBSD. It comes pre-configured running the Openbox windows manager[2][8][4][9], but other windows managers and desktop environments can also be installed. The desktop layout uses a Tint2 panel on top with a dock on the bottom using plank.[9]
