Norbert Jenő Káel (born November 22, 1974) is a Hungarian concert pianist, composer, and arranger. He is known for creating a fusion of jazz and classical styles, representing his own approach to crossover music.

Education and Beginning of Career[edit]

After finishing middle school, Norbert got accepted to Béla Bartók Music High School in Miskolc, Hungary, and later transferred to its Budapest branch. At the same time, Norbert was interested in conducting and took lessons at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music. After high school, Norbert continued his musical path by attending the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, where he spent his time between playing classical pieces as well as working on jazz transcriptions and improvisation.[1]

In 2001, Norbert received a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts,[2] where he had the opportunity to study with such musicians as Joe Lovano, Laszlo Gardony, Gary Burton. During those years, he composed and arranged music for the Boston-based recording studio, Axiom Sound, and performed in various jazz clubs. After Berklee, Norbert was invited to become a member of the jazz group, Slipstream, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. In 2006, Norbert moved to New York City and took lessons at the Juilliard School from Kenny Barron on the jazz side, as well as Seymour Lipkin and Matti Raekallio on the classical side.[1][3] In 2011, Norbert moved back to Europe. Since then, he has been traveling the world performing in numerous countries.[4][5] [6] [7] [8] In Hungary, Norbert's favorite venues to play include Müpa Budapest, and the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest.[9]

Solo[edit]

Norbert's solo piano work is focusing primarily on the fusion of classical and jazz musical styles.[4] He arranged his own version of pieces written by such famous composers as Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Frédéric Chopin, Franz Liszt, Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy, Alexander Scriabin, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Béla Bartók, and Zoltán Kodály. In addition to his work in the genre of crossover, Norbert's original ideas can be found in his own musical pieces, such as " Voyage," "Jazz Etudes," "Piano Fantasie," "Beautiful Silence."

Jazzical Trio[edit]

In 2014, Norbert started rehearsing with the drummer Andras "Pecek" Lakatos, and Peter Olah on bass, which naturally led to establishing Jazzical Trio. The group is actively performing at jazz clubs and big festivals around the world.[6] [10]Jazzical Trio's first album, "Duality," came out in 2016.[11]

Duets[edit]

Throughout his career, Norbert cooperated with numerous great musicians. He often performs duets where both classical and jazz styles are equally represented and explored. Norbert's classical pianist partners are Krisztina Fejes and József Balog, while Károly Binder, (Norbert's former teacher) is one of his jazz partners. Another duet was formed when Romanian singer, Teodora Enache, and Norbert performed together during their tour in Romania.[12] The recent duet projects include collaborating with the Hungarian vocalist, Nikoletta Szőke.[13]
