Norbert Küpper (graphic designer) (* in Düsseldorf) is a German newspaper designer, graphic designer, typographer and reading researcher. [1]
Biography[edit]
Küpper initially trained as a typesetter and then studied visual communication at the University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf (Germany).
In 1984 he founded the office for newspaper design. He has redesigned more than 180 newspapers[1]. He works predominantly in the German-speaking world, but has also redesigned titles in the United Arab Emirates, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Italy.[2]
For lectures and seminars he was also invited as a guest speaker at various universities, including: Fontys School of Journalism[3], Tilburg, the Netherlands; Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK)[4], study program Cast (degree program) / audiovisual media.
From 1981 to 2007 he held a lectureship in newspaper design at the University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf.[5]
In addition to his work as a newspaper designer, he explores reader behavior with a gaze-recording camera. Recent findings are documented in the book Newspaper Design and Reading Research, which was published in 2015. The book documents six new designs by Küpper: VDI Nachrichten[6], Stuttgarter Nachrichten, GrenzEcho (Eupen, Belgium), Mindener Tageblatt[7], business newspapers (Austria) and the trade journal Produktion. The basis of the book is an overview of his current eye-tracking projects.
Since 1998 Küpper organizes the European Newspaper Award[8][9][10][11]newspaperaward.org, a European competition for concept and design of newspapers[12]. The competition will take place for the 20th time in 2018. For each year of the competition a yearbook with the results has been published. The book Newspaper Design 19 was released in March 2018 as a DVD.
In 2003 he founded the European Newspaper Congress ENC, which took place in the first four years in the Coronation Hall of the Aachen City Hall and since than in the City Hall of the City of Vienna. More than 500 journalists and publishing managers from 35 countries took part in the 19th European Newspaper Congress 2018.
Since 1989 he is the author of a column on newspaper design in the German-language journalist magazine MediumMagazin.mediummagazin
In 2014, he was spokesman at the 36th International Congress of the SND - Society for News Design - in Frankfurt am Main. His topic: "Europe's Creative Diversity in Print and Online".[13]SND
In February 2018 he published on medium.com an analysis of the new logo and corporate design of Lufthansa. He invited five specialists in logo design from Denmark, Luxembourg, Brazil, Greece and the Netherlands.medium.com
