Nordgreen is a Danish minimalist watch brand founded in 2017.[1], launching on Kickstarter a year after its inception. The Scandinavian watch design company maintains a small rotation of unisex watches sold to a wide global audience, achieving a brand presence in over 70 countries with its designs[2].

The company, which is headquartered in Denmark, sold over 1.2 Million USD worth of watches in its first year, according to Nordgreen[3]. In 2020, the third financial year of the brand, revenue reached a value of +16 Million USD[4].

History[edit]

Nordgreen was launched by three friends, Vasilij Brandt, Pascar Sivam, and Christian Arnstedt in 2017.

The watch brand's name is a combination of the location of the company ( Nord - indicating Northen Europe ) and their commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly initiatives (green).

Nordgreen was started with funding from Blazar Capital, a private e-commerce brand incubator which the three Nordgreen founders also co-created.

The company achieved early success by combining minimalist watch design elements as envisioned by the founders and award-winning designer, Jakob Wagner.

Chief Designer Jakob Wagner[edit]

Jakob Wagner was brought on to create the entire range of Nordgreen's watches. The watch designer, who has more than 20 years of design experience under his belt, mentions that working with the watches is a bit more difficult due to the confined spaces that he has to work with.

Before his work with Nordgreen, Jakob Wagner has enjoyed successful stints at international, design-oriented brands such as Bang & Olufsen [5], Hay [6], Muuto[5], and Capellini[7].

Jakob Wagner holds a degree in design (Design Engineering) from the Danish Academy of Engineering (now the Technical University of Denmark, DTU). He also holds an additional design degree (Product Design) from the Art Centre in Montreux[5], Switzerland.

With training from reputable design institutes, Wagner launched his design studio[5] (Jakob Wagner Studio) in Copenhagen in 1993. The studio has now become the birthplace of numerous brand designs which have won six IF Design award and three Red Dot Awards among others. He also has his works featured as a standing exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York[8]

Awards[edit]

In 2020, the Men's Pioneer watch line received the Red Dot design award.[9]. The statement of the jury cited the "purist design" and "easy readability" of the watch among other things that earned it the prize[9]

The unisex Philosopher line was nominated for an IF Design award in 2021.[10], claiming the proizue in the product category. Ont he award page, IF Design award mentions that the watch line's sdesign "pays tribute to humanity's ability to learn from the past, act in the present, and continuously strive for forward-looking thinking"[10]

Giving Back Programme[edit]

Nordgreen supports three global NGOs on an ongoing basis, by donating a portion of each watch sold to one of the three. The company encourages the customer to choose which charity theyt would like to support - the unique serial number on the back of the watch allows the customer to track which charity was chosen[11].

A partnership with Pratham UK allows customers to support the education of children in India with the purchase of every watch[12]. Nordgreen also teamed up with Cool Earth to protect rainforests globally[13]. Likewise, the company is a member of the Water for Good Foundation which provides clean drinking water[14] to kids and families in the Central African Republic.
