North West Greenway Network

Project Background

In December 2016, Derry City and Strabane District Council, in partnership with Donegal County Council, the Department for Infrastructure (NI) and Sustrans (the UK-based cycling and walking charity), was awarded €14.8 million funding from the European Union's INTERREG VA programme, administered by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB), to construct 46.5 km of cross-border greenway linking Northern Ireland to the Republic of Ireland. This will link Derry City to Buncrana via Bridgend; Muff to Derry via Culmore; and Lifford to Strabane.

The project was officially launched on 26 February 2018 at a function in An Grianán Hotel, Burt, County Donegal. There is an eight-person time in place. Five members of the team (including the Programme Manager and an Active Travel Officer employed by Sustrans) are based in Derry City & Strabane District Council, and the remaining three are based with Donegal County Council.

Project objectives

The core objective is to construct 46.5 km of dedicated greenway and cycle lanes, and through modal shift, to encourage over 500 users to make their cross-border journey by bike or foot. Other objectives include:

• Reduce carbon dioxide emissions entering our atmosphere by over 300 carbon tonnes per annum by 2023
• Encourage more people to walk and cycle as part of their daily routine
• Invest in the wider economic and social infrastructure in the North West Region

Timelines

The project commenced in 2017. Once the consultation process has been completed, it is planned to design and construct the 46.5 km of greenway before December 2021.
