The Northern California Herpetological Society (NCHS) is a nonprofit organization devoted to herpetology.

About[edit]

The mission of NCHS is to educate the public on the natural history, conservation, and captive rescue of reptiles and amphibians. NCHS is powered by a team of board members [1] and headquartered in Sacramento, California. The current President is Alex Fulton.

NCHS educates the public by hosting monthly meetings in Sacramento that feature guest lecturers in fields like conservation biology, captive breeding, rescue and rehabilitation, zoology, and wildlife photography[2]. NCHS encourages membership in the society to further perpetuate its mission. Members receive benefits including the Northern California Herpetological Society monthly newsletter and discounts on adoption fees of rescued animals in NCHS' care.

History[edit]

NCHS was founded in 1982 in Davis, California by a group of four like-minded reptile and amphibian enthusiasts named Rich Bireley, Mike Bumgardner, Randall Grey, and Pat Morris, who had the shared goal to form a new herpetological society focused on propagation, education, and research. The society began meeting regularly, holding conferences and producing publications related to captive propagation and husbandry [3], and quickly grew in membership.

Publications[edit]

NCHS publishes a monthly newsletter for its members and multiple animal care sheets for the public, including:
