OZWE Games SA is a Swiss video game developer based in Lausanne, Switzerland. It was founded in 2008 by Frédéric Kaplan at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. The company is most known for its flagship ‘Anshar Wars 2’ and its latest title ‘Death Lap.’

Since 2014, OZWE Games has specialized in Virtual Reality (VR) games. The company’s first project was ‘Anshar Wars,’ for the Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition Launch, whose positive reviews led the company to become an Oculus third-party studio and spawned two sequels within three years. Simultaneously, OZWE Games also worked on ‘VRTillery’, a stationary shooting game.

OZWE Games’ next project was ‘Anshar Wars 2,’ a successful video game that Samsung bundled with its Galaxy S7 phones and Samsung Gear VR amongst six virtual reality games, which included popular titles such as EVE: Gunjack and Land’s End. In 2016, the Anshar franchise proved to be both a critical and financial success for the company.

In 2019, OZWE Games introduced ‘Death Lap,’ a Twisted Metal tribute with the zany antics of go-kart-style racing games like Mario Kart for a darkly comic racing game.

Over the years, OZWE Games has received considerable recognition from critics as an acclaimed video game developer. OZWE Games was named ‘National Winner’ in The  European Business Awards, with turnover between 0 and 25 million euros.[1]

History[edit]

2008: Foundation[edit]

OZWE Games was founded in April 2008 by Frédéric Kaplan at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, who was determined to create a computer fully controllable remotely through gestures.

In 2009, the QB1 was able to track the user visually and to surround him/her with an interactive halo. Early versions of the QB1 were bought by Samsung and Logitech.

2010: Bookapp.com[edit]

OZWE Games specialized in the digital press and developed applications for iOS and Android.

2014: Virtual Reality (VR)[edit]

OZWE Games embarked on the development of games in Virtual Reality (VR), under the leadership of CEO Stéphane Intissar. The team created and launched Anshar Wars, a multiplayer space shooter and VRtillery for the Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition Launch.[2]

‘Anshar Wars 2’ launched on Samsung Gear VR  in 2015 and was praised for its varied challenges and richly detailed environments, from ships to the asteroids to the backdrops.  In 2016, ‘Anshar Wars 2,’ renowned for its success, was made compatible with Oculus Rift.

In 2017, the studio was asked to develop the third installment of the Anshar series. To make the game more advanced and varied Anshar Online shared many characteristics with familiar MMOs, offering a mix of single-player and multiplayer gameplay — with far more robust multiplayer options including co-op, PvP and racing modes with cross-platform play than its predecessors. In 2018, Anshar Online joined the worldwide release of Oculus Go and brought all Oculus players together from mobile VR (Samsung Gear VR), PC VR (Oculus Rift), and standalone VR (Oculus Go).[3]

In 2019, OZWE Games introduced ‘Death Lap,’ a VR combat racing game for the Oculus Quest and the Rift Platform. The game takes its name from an annual tournament held once a year. Behind it, all is the host, Nitro Saint Payne — portrayed by Gil Alma, a fictional character inspired by a mix of famous supervillains — Arcade from Marvel Comics; Mojo from Marvel Comics; Dan Killian in The Running Man science fiction novel written by Stephen King;  Joker; and Cruella de Vil, the main antagonist of The Hundred and One Dalmatians.
