The show was created with the intention to look at the current state of the Chinese economy; in a time of profound global changes, how do China’s “Going Global” and “Belt & Road” economic strategies effect the flow of Chinese capital overseas? What are the achievements China has made and what are the challenges it faces? Is there a difference between the rise of Chinese capital and that of other country’s capital? How can governments, corporations and stake holders work together to create truly sustainable development?

Program[edit]

Over the past 2 and a half years, Odyssey of the Dragon has visited over 60 countries and filmed over 200 corporate cases. It chronicles the stories of Chinese enterprises and individuals striving overseas to build, develop or win new markets. At the same time, it looks at how key industries from China have evolved over the 40 years of China’s own “Reform and Opening” policy, and how they’re now connecting with China’s “Going Global” and “Belt & Road” strategies to impact global markets. While Odyssey of the Dragon explores these larger global development trends, it also looks at the effects Chinese ventures are having on local stakeholders and their communities, and the social and environmental costs.

Work w/International Organizations[edit]

As international organizations have become increasingly active in the discussion on the “Going Global” and “Sustainable Development” strategies of Chinese enterprises, Phoenix Television and Odyssey of the Dragon have taken a lead role as a media facilitator. In 2016, the United Nation’s United Nations Development Program (UNDP), China’s Ministry of Commerce and the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission jointly established the China Overseas Sustainable Development Platform.

As the exclusive media partner, Phoenix Satellite Television jointly prepared the 2017 China Overseas Sustainable Development Report. At the Belt & Road Forum held in mid-May 2017, the 2017 China Overseas Sustainable Development Report was the only official report issued by the Department of Cooperation of the Ministry of Commerce. The Development Goals Framework was produced as a video version and was also broadcast during the May 2017 program. The quartet will hold four global forums in 2018 located in Beijing, at the UN headquarters in New York, at the EU headquarters in Brussels and the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa. They will also hold four regional forums in Myanmar, Pakistan, Germany and the United States to promote and discuss model cases and best practices of Chinese companies overseas sustainable development.
