The phrase Prairie Mountain Mayhem sometimes referred to as The Prairie Mountain Rivalry refers to the athletic rivalry between West Virginia University Mountaineers and the University of Oklahoma Sooners of the Big 12 Conference.[4] The Oklahoma Sooners were a member school of the Big 8 Conference before the formation of the Big 12 Conference in 1996. West Virginia was a member school of the Big East Conference before it dissolved, joining the Big 12 Conference in early 2012.[5]

Oklahoma currently leads the series 8–2–0. The series has historically been lopsided in the Sooners' favor; West Virginia has only defeated Oklahoma just two times since their first meeting in 1958, and has never done so three times in a row. Although the series has been interrupted twice since its inception, the rivalry has been renewed annually since 2012 when West Virginia joined the Big 12.[6]

Notable games[edit]

1958: 1958 was the first meeting between the two teams. It ended with a 47-14 victory for the Sooners with Bobby Boyd making a record setting 99 yard pass to Wahoo McDaniel. This broke the record for the Longest Plays at the Stadium, and the record still stands today. [17]

1982: 1982 was the third meeting between the two teams, and the first victory for the Mountaineers. The game was the Unranked Mountaineers' Season opener against the #9 ranked Sooners. It ended with a sweeping victory of 27-41 for the Mountaineers.[18] At the time it was West virginia's largest road win.[19]

2008: The 2008 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl featured the fourth ranked (BCS), Big 12 champion Oklahoma Sooners hosting the ninth ranked (BCS), Big East champion West Virginia Mountaineers. West Virginia defeated Oklahoma by a score of 48–28. The contest was televised on Fox.

2012: 2012 was the fifth meeting between the teams, and the first victory for the Sooners since 1978.[20] The game also was the first in which the teams played since West Virginia had joined the Big 12[21], and the Sooners' first in Morgantown. It has been the closest game between the two with a 50-49 victory for the Sooners[22] after Landry Jones passed the ball to Kenny Stills for 5 yard gain for a TOUCHDOWN with only 24 seconds left on the clock.[23]
