New opera in the 21st Century[edit]

New operas have continued to be written and produced to in the 21st century. Typically this occurs through composers being commissioned to write an opera by opera companies, like the Metropolitan Opera, Opera Philadelphia, the American Opera Initiative of the Washington National Opera at the Kennedy Center and other prominent music groups like the Salzburg Festival. The Met began its commissioning program for new operas in 2006.[1] A commission could be for a full-length or shorter opera and feature a full orchestra or a small chamber ensemble.

Composer and conductor, Thomas Adès, has written and premiered three full-length operas: Powder Her Face in 1995, The Tempest in 2004, which premiered at the Royal Opera House, and The Exterminating Angel, which was commissioned and premiered by the Salzburg Festival in 2016 and the Met in 2017.[2] L'Amour de Loin, a full length opera written by Kaija Saariaho, was a joint commission between the Santa Fe Opera, Salzburg Festival and Théâtre du Châtelet and premiered at the Salzburg Festival in 2000. Like Adès, Saariaho has written multiple operas, including Adriana Mater (2005) and Only the Sound Remains (2015). Operas by composer John Adams include Dr. Atomic (2005) and Girls of the Golden West (2017). Chaya Czernowin's opera Infinite Now, based on the novel All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, premiered in April 2017.[3]
