Manufacturing asphalt products and lubricating and processing oils, PARAMO, a.s.[1] has its headquarters in Pardubice and production facilities in Pardubice and Kolín. The company also buys and processes oil hydrogenates and hydrocrackates from Unipetrol RPA. The resulting intermediate products are used for the production of base and lubricating oils with very low sulphur content. Paramo is a subsidiary company of Unipetrol.[2]

History[edit]

The beginning of today’s Paramo dates back to 1889, when David Fanto established his own factory for distilling and refining petroleum from crude oil in Pardubice. In 1907, Fanto changed his company into a joint-stock company and became its executive. In 1945, the construction of the state-owned enterprise for refining mineral oils began in Pardubice on the site of rubble and debris remaining after two bombing raids from the end of the second World War. Trading under the name PARAMO (Pardubická rafinérie minerálních olejů – Pardubice Refinery of Mineral Oils), the enterprise started exclusive production of special asphalts in 1960. After transformation of the state-owned enterprise on 1stJanuary 1994, the Paramo joint-stock company continued in the responsible work of previous generations. Since the end of 2000, the company has been a member of the Unipetrol Group. In the past, Paramo also sold fuel at Paramo brand petrol stations. Today, most of these stations operate under the brand Pap Oil. In 2008, the company launched an alternative fuel on the market – SMN 30 (mixed diesel oil with 30% biocomponent content). In 2013, crude oil processing at the Pardubice refinery was discontinued and the company now continues to produce lubricants, special asphalts and asphalt products made from intermediate products delivered from other refineries.[3]

The company was partially privatised during the second wave of voucher privatisation, with 70 % of shares remaining in the National Property Fund (Fond národního majetku). In 2000, the Unipetrol company bought these shares, integrating the Koramo[4] company into the Paramo enterprise in 2003 and gradually acquiring additional Paramo shares. The company’s shares were traded on the Prague exchange[5] until 3rd March 2009 and were also a part of the PX 50 Index[6] until 2006. As a shareholder with 92% stake in the Paramo company, Unipetrol decided to acquire the remaining shares in January 2009 through a squeeze out, and from 4th March 2009 became the sole shareholder, similarly to the Czech company Benzina.[7]
