Pan-poom

Meaning of Pan-Poom Pan-Poom is a container that has many types of flowers decorated on it. It is the object used to worship the high class so each class has a different decoration and material. The word is generated from two words - pan and poom. The first word Pan means special container for organizing the flower, joss stick and candle to bring it to worship the Buddha, King, teacher or respected people during special events (phillipsen, 2016). The second word Poom is the character of a branch and leaf or the real or synthetic flower that is organized like the bush (wikipedia, 2017).

History

Pan-poom was believed to be introduced during the reign of King Rama I, so this period is called “Pan-poom thien.” The shape is like the blooming lotus flower. It was used by the King to worship the Rattanattaya or Buddhism in special events such as Asalha Puja Day or day before the Buddhist Lent (wikipedia, 2017). 

Type of Pan-poom

1. Pan-poom thien

- This type is shaped like a blooming lotus. It is used for decoration in old traditional events such as Asalaha Puja Day and Buddhist Lent. It is suitable for a king.
Therefore, when the event ends, the monk brings the melted  mass of candle to mold it again to be used in the temple. This type of pan-poom used in the temple is the symbolic temple of the king such as Wat Phra Kaew, Wat pho, Wat bowonniwet vihara and Wat benchamabophit .It is not used as much at present because it is hard to find the craftsman.

2. Fresh flower Pan-poom

Fresh flower Pan-poom

- This type is for offering fresh flowers such as lotus, rose, white Champaka, etc. The form of Pan-poom is also the blooming lotus shape. This type generalpeople can use to worship the Buddha and teachers or respected people. This type has been used since King Rama V period because the arts in this period was growing. Fresh flower Pan-poom in this period use only one flower to decorate it. Nowadays, this type mixes different types of flowers together and the base is made from glass, brass and plastic.

3.Thong and ngein Pan-Poom

- This type uses the golden and metallic color fabric and the shape as the blooming lotus that is made from foam. This type common people can use to worship the Buddha and teacher or respected people also.

Putting of Pan-poom

There are two objectives of putting Pan-Poom 1.To worship the Buddha 1.1 To put the fresh flower Pan-Poom

First, put the Buddha statue or king picture on top the first table and bring the pan-poom put on the second table . 1.2 Put the Thong and Ngein Pan-Poom on the right side of the Buddha statue or King’s picture and the last table put the candle and joss stick.

2. To worship the King or high class people

2.1 Put the fresh flower Pan-Poom

- This type puts only one or a pair of Pan-Poom and it has a lot of table levels.  

Caution of making Pan-Poom

The body of Pan-poom uses the material the same as the top of Pan-Poom . Chatra should not be placed on top of Pan-Poom because it is the symbol of the king. Outfit in the event Government officer: White uniform and the decorated coin given by the king. Civilian : Polite uniform
