Paper Mario: Dangerous Land (or known in Japan as Paper Mario: Tiyoshu Famicon Yiuj) is a 2022 American-Japanese live action/CGI hybrid film distributed by Miramax, The Weinstein Company and Roadside Attractions and produced PDI Animation Studios, 20th Century Studios and ToonBox/Redrover/Gulfstream Studios.

The film was released in January 2021 internationally by The Weinstein Company, Miramax and Roadside Attractions. The film received mostly widespread acclaim and was a box office success grossing $507 million worldwide.

Plot[edit]

The film revolves around Mario (Charles Martinet) in a train, finding a green hat, and greets with the Express Owls and shockingly finds a murderer on the train, Mario then ends up in the fight with the bad Goombas, but when someone hacks the PDIDD-OS 12, Mario gets sucked into the PDIdd. He ends up into the PDIdd Paper Mario world, and goes underwater trying to find the Crisin Yoong shield.

ConnerTheWaffle is so confused about the games Doshin The Giant, Mario Tennis, 3D Tetris, the Pokémon Mini and Mario Artist: Polygon Studio.

Mario fights other enemies and the Koosapio, while China announced plans to outlaw and ban all video games.

Base 51 starts to fall apart and burn, many workers flee, and Mario defeats the enemie, the outlaws, who are just trying to be nice, escape and China decided to change their minds, and keeps video games unbanned.

Peach then declairs Mario as king of the Mushroom Kingdom and the kingdom forms a parade which ran from Mushroom Kingdom to Japan.

Development[edit]

In November 2018, PDI announced that a Paper Mario movie is in the works. In June 2019, the cast was announced. In January 2020, the title was revealed as Tron: Mario Land.

In July 2020, the titled was changed to Paper Mario: Dangerous Land.

Production was completed in July 2021.

Animation[edit]

The film was animated by PDI's Japanese campus, while additional animation was handled by Hoongman. The Japanese campus includes a team of 1,400 animators. While, Hoongman includes a team of 304 animators.

Filming[edit]

The film filmed in Japan during January 8, 2020, and wrapped up in May 15, 2020. The Chinese film shot was filmed in July 2020. The PDI meeting was filmed in August 2020.

Box Office[edit]

The film grossed $304 million in Japan, $375 million in Canada, $406 million in UK, $356 million in Australia, and $507 million worldwide. The film became a huge box office success, that Roadside Attractions, TWC, and Miramax earned $45 million.

Critical Reception[edit]

The film received 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and in Metacritic, had a score of 97 out of 100. Miyocha Yamatoe, a Japanese critic, praised the film for the animation, story, characters, voice acting (particularly Martinet) and pacing.

Elon Hiyokama of IGN gave the film 5 stars out of 5, writing "This film has a great plot, and characters, even the voice acting, pacing and animation is really great. You should love this movie and see it again and again. Gumpei Yishunahui, of PDI, also a programmer of SpongeBob PDIdd, praised the film stating "This is a great film experience, and a must-watch film from PDI."

Audiences also praised the film that it saved the Paper Mario franchise.

Sequel[edit]

In January 18, 2022, PDI announced that due to the success of Paper Mario: Dangerous Land, they will be producing a trilogy of the successful film, the first sequel is called, Paper Mario: Dangerous Land 2: Ura Zelda, and the other sequel was called Paper Mario: Dangerous Land 3: Mission Impossible.

The sequels will be released between 2023 to 2024.
