Paper Wishes is written by Lois Sepahban. It is a historical fiction book about the 1942 internment of the Japanese immigrants and citizens in the United States after the attack at Pearl Harbor.


Plot[edit]

10 year old Manami was living a peaceful life at Bainbridge Island. In 1942, Pearl Harbor was attacked and Manami's life was changed. She was forced to leave her home along with her family and live in designated prison camps.


The story begins with Manami and Grandfather walking on the beach with Yuujin, their dog. During their walk they have noticed a lot of military activity. Manami and Grandfather walk to the school that Manami is attending.

Once Manami was in class, she was pulled aside with her Japanese peers.

Character List[edit]

  • Manami-- Age 10. Japanese-American and the main chracter of the story.
  • Yuujin-- He is the dog of Manami. They are seperated after Manami was sent to the prison-village.
  • Grandpa-- He is the father of Mom and Manami's grandfather. He and Yuujin were best friends,
  • Ron-- He is the oldest son of Mom and Dad. He is Manami's older brother. He left college and lived with Manami in the prison-village. He became a teacher.
  • Mom-- Mom is the mother of Manami. Her name is not revealed. Her last name is Tanaka.
  • Dad-- He is Manami's father. His name is not revealed in the story. His last name is Tanaka.
