Paragon Cause are an indie rock/electronic musical duo consisting of Michelle Opthof on Vocals/Keyboards and Jay Bonaparte on Guitar and Production. Their songs often mix electronic music production with more traditional rock and shoegaze. Many of their songs discuss topics from a feminist point of view, including domestic violence, rape, mental health, toxic masculinity and its control over marginalized groups.

Biography[edit]

Michelle, originally from Beamsville, Ontario attended Carleton University to study music. She achieved a Bachelor's degree in vocal performance and then began performing in musical theater. Jay, originally from Sydney, Nova Scotia, was a member of a number of Halifax bands. Jay has performed and worked with Rose Cousins, Servo, as well as members of The SuperFriendz, Thrush Hermit, Steve Gates and a number of other Halifax Musicians. The duo met in Ottawa in 2018.[1] Shortly after forming the band the duo began recording their debut EP Escape.

The band then released their second EP Lies Between Us,[2] which was recorded at their private studio and produced by Sune Rose Wagner of The Raveonettes. The album was the #1 album in Ottawa on CKCU.[3][4]

After this release, the band recorded their first full album, 2020’s What We Started,[5][6] again produced by Sune Rose Wagner. The band wrote and created a graphic novel to accompany the album. [7] The album resulted in the duo being nominated as a finalist for Indies awards at Canadian Music Week. [8]

In 2020, prior to the start of COVID, Paragon Cause recorded their second full length album, Autopilot,[9][10][11][12][13][14] [15] in Canada.[16] [17] Similar to their last album, Autopilot featured production as well as guitar and vocals by Sune Rose Wagner. The album also featured production and performances by Liam Howe of The Sneaker Pimps and Eric Avery, original Bass player of Jane’s Addiction.

Autopilot was nominated for 3 and won 2 ECMA awards (East Coast Music Awards) for Electronic Album of the Year and Rising Star Award,[18] [19][20] [21] as well a best production at the Capital Music Awards 2022.

The duo has also produced the soundtrack and sound design to the award-winning short film, Last Fish, First Boat by Jenn Thornill Verma.[22][23] [24][25]

They also have recorded soundtrack work for The Nighttime Podcast.[26]

In 2022 Paragon Cause Produced a remix of the 80's hit song The Metro by Berlin for the release of their re-release of Take My Breath Away single.[27]
