From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

A Parranda is traditional Spanish dance that originated from Murcia, the eastern areas of Almería (Los-Vélez, Levante Almeriense and Valle de Almanzora), as well as south-eastern Albacete (Campos de Hellín, Sierras de Segura), most likely in the 18th Century.

Etymology & Origin:[edit]

The origin of it's name[1] according to the DRAE is similar to that of a ''group of musicians ho come out at night to play music and dance'' and a ''boisterous spree, especially one that is done from one place to another''.

Parranda originated from Segiuidilla (old Castillian folk music), three parts of which would later on form and evolve south-eastern Spanish culture.

Music:[edit]

Parrandas are formed by three couplets, paired with three verses. Its structure is similar to that of Seguidilla:[2] beginning, ending, return, couplets and ending. The melody is diatonic and syllabic. It has a ternary rhythm, and the harmony is tonal and in played in major. The tree types of Parranda are: solo, trio, and campo.

It is often acompanied by Murcian castanets and finger snapping (pitos). The instruments used for this variety of music are guitars, guitarros, violins and bandurrias (Spanish lutes)

Origin of Parranda

Dance:[edit]

At the beginning of the dance two rows are made, leaving the pairs in front. In its basic structure, it begins with some lateral steps and then the dancers cross with their partner and turn themselves around . However, there are many varieties of steps and turns characteristic of each town or region.

Varieties:[edit]

The variety of the county of the Northwest in the Region of Murcia and the populations of the Sierra de Segura de Albacete are called pardicas.
