The Past Global Changes (PAGES) project[1] was established in 1991 as a non-profit international effort to coordinate and promote paleoscience/past global change research. The primary objective is to facilitate international research into understanding past changes in the Earth system to improve projections of future climate and environment, and inform strategies for sustainability. PAGES is funded by the Swiss Academy of Sciences [2] and supported in-kind by the University of Bern, Switzerland. [3] [4] Up until 2015 it was under the umbrella of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP). [5] It is now a Global Research Project of Future Earth [6] and a scientific partner of WCRP [7] In 2018, PAGES launched the PAGES Early-Career Network for early-career researchers in paleoscience.[8]

Science[edit]

PAGES' science structure addresses the key components of the Earth system through the themes climate, environment, and humans.[9] PAGES' scope of interest includes the physical climate system, biogeochemical cycles, ecosystem processes, biodiversity, and human dimensions, on different time scales - from the Pliocene[10] to the recent past. PAGES also provides some funding for early-career researchers to attend workshops and conferences [11] [12] [13]

Working groups[edit]

Working groups bring paleoscientists/scientists together from around the globe to target specific aspects of PAGES' science. Currently there are about 20 groups working on themes such as Climate of the past 2000 years, climate variability, climate reconstruction and impacts from societal archives, floods, sea-level rise, sea-ice dynamics, speleothems and volcanoes.[14] Working group members offer their time voluntarily. They tackle broad questions that cannot be answered by a single research team but require the integration of the wider international science community. Their results are published in established scientific journals and a database has been collated online. [15] [16] [17]

Publications[edit]

On average twice a year PAGES releases the Past Global Changes Magazine, a free publication focused on making content accessible and understandable also for non-scientists.[18] [19]
