Patterns of Decision Driver (PoDD) Grid

Created by Dr Darrell Jaya-Ratnam of DIEMconsulting Ltd, a Patterns of Decision Driver Grid (or PoDD grid) is a method of capturing and displaying the human decision making process, where the decision to be made is in a complex environment, likely with many drivers affecting it[1]. The method works on the principle that our brains are advanced pattern recognition machines, and therefore have a distinguished ability to map a pattern of criteria with appropriate decision ends.

The strength of the associated drivers for that decision is represented by numbered circles on each line. PoDD grids can be used to:

·       Capture the complexity of the human’s decision making process

·       Provide a visualisation of the decision drivers

·       Form the input for fuzzy based AI systems

The PoDD grid uses a system that establishes what patterns of characteristics/drivers needs to be true first for a particular decision to be made.

That is, you list all the potential decision ends first and works backwards to establish what would need to happen to land on a particular decision.

Ethical AI decisions-tools for defence[2][edit]

Diemconsulting Ltd an empirical approach to combining the ethical with the logical, highlighted three things that are necessary to create an ethical AI tool: Some initial belief of ‘good’ and ‘bad’, a mechanism to turn experience into guilt, and the ability to explain its actions.

Logistic Development Agenda: Conceptual thinking[3][edit]

This study was commissioned to assist Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) in answering the following question, as part of their wider Logistic Development Agenda (LDA) task:

How must Defence Support change to realise an innovative, agile and cohesive Defence Support Network (DSN) capable of exploiting existing and future technologies and who/how can that change be enabled, governed and delivered?’

A PoDD grid was used to illustrate prioritised lines of innovation and enablers in the form of a proposed initial LDA value stream ‘portfolio’, and is the basis for the proposed roadmap.
