Peter Schreier Choir[edit]

Peter Schreier Choir was born in 1991 as a temporary ensemble when the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra needed a high quality choir of 50 singers for performances of St.John Passion by Bach. The choir was formed by the singers of Tapiola Chamber Choir and Finnish Chamber Choir.

Visiting later the Helsinki and Lahti Symphonic Orchestras, the Tampere Hall, the Savonlinna Opera Festival and the Naantali Music Festival as guest conductor Peter Schreier repeatedly asked for the same choir. Since the end of the Finnish Chamber Choir in 1993 Peter Schreier Choir consisted of Tapiola Chamber Choir and a number of free-lance singers of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. During 1991-2002 the choir performed the Passions, the Motets, the Mass in B Minor and the Christmas Oratorio by J.S Bach, the Requiem and Mass in C Minor by Mozart and the Creation by Haydn, a total of 25 concerts.

In 2000, the choir was honored to take part in the German Europäische Kirchenmusikfest, where Maestro Schreier was awarded the European Church Music Prize.
