Phoenix General is an American clothing brand and retailer founded in 2011 by American fashion designers Josh Hahn and Kenny Barrett.[1]

History[edit]

Josh Hahn & Kenny Barrett have been working in the Phoenix Arts Community since 2004 alongside a group of Phoenicians with a mission to bring vibrancy & creativity back to a once forgotten area along Roosevelt Street in Downtown Phoenix. Together they opened an Urban Farming Public Art Intervention called Growhouse PHX (est. 2008) and a Cooperative Artist Retail Space called GROWop Boutique (est. 2011) in the center of the emerging Roosevelt Row Arts District. The boutique carried local artisan-made goods along with vintage clothing and organic tees. The Urban Farm hosts weekly volunteer workdays geared towards empowering & inspiring neighbors & local high school students with the knowledge to grow food in the desert while helping to beautify a blighted, forgotten property.[2]

In 2016 they were uprooted by the purchase and redevelopment of the 1920's bungalow by Desert Viking Real Estate Developer based in Chandler, Arizona.[3] At this unexpected crossroad they decided to take a chance and founded a new store called Phoenix General in Uptown Phoenix in June of 2016 as a place to share their passion for art, travel, and fashion. The new store has a very clean and minimal feel, drawing inspiration from the rich culture & landscape of their hometown in the Sonoran Desert and their roots in the arts community. The clothing and products are well-suited for the desert climate, and fit the modern style of the brand.[4]
