Pino Lella

Pino Lella, born 1926 in Milan, Italy. Pino was born to two loving parents who had a second son named Mimo. Pino grew up running the streets of the city, climbing and biking everywhere. during the summers as a child Pino and Mimo were sent to a missionary called Casa Alpina near lake Como. At the missionary Pino would study with other boys and climb in the alps.

    Pino was 17 during the summer of 1943 and World War Two and engulfed Europe. That summer was a turning point for Pino and his city. One evening during the summer of 1926 Pino and his brother were escaping the reality of the current state of Italy and the Nazi occupation when the projected froze and the raid sirens sounded. moments later Pino who was sitting next to his brother were hit by debris as the Theater was hit by a bomb. this was a point in time were Milan was under constant raids from Allied bombers trying to rid the city of Nazi and Fascists. During the raids at the request of his parents Pino took his little brother and they left for Casa Alpina. Father Re was the lead priest at Casa Alpina and when Pino reached him during the raids he put him to work. Father Re began instructing Pino on long climbs up the alps day after day. Shortly after Pino memorizing the slopes he began to take Jewish refugees that were harbored at Casa Alpina up over the alps to the boarder of Switzerland. Pino did this until he was called back to Milan by his uncle and Father. Recruiters had been to the family home and they knew that Pino was about to turn eighteen.
    After turning eighteen Pino was forced against his will by his parents to enlist in the German army so he wasn't drafted to the Russian front. One shining day in the smoldering city of Milan Pino saw a Nazi driver attempting to fix the car he was driving outside of a cafe. ignoring the General flags on the front of the car Pino offered his assistance and fixed the car for the man only to turn around and Look a Nazi General in the eyes. General Hans Leyers asked Pino if he was a good driver and after answering the general dismissed his other driver and told Pino to report to him as his personal driver. Pino had becoming the personal driver the second highest ranking general in Italy. 
     After telling his aunt and uncle Pino was encouraged to start recording the things that he saw general leyers do and the places they went. Pino worked with the general and would go to his Uncle's shop and tell him what he saw and heard. Pino had become a spy and everything he Told his uncle went to London and the Allies. for the next several months Pino drove Leyers around and watched him work prisoners of war to death, take Gold into Switzerland, Build fortifications on the Gothic line, and sentence men to death. Towards the end of the war when the allies and broken the Gothic front Pino was given the order and he arrested General Hans Leyers. Through favors the General managed to save his life and Pino was ordered by the Allies to get the General up Brenner pass into Austria where he would be tried with war crimes. The war ended in 1945 and the Nuremberg trials began. the trials went on and finally gave up and acted like the last two years of the war never happened. Leyers and gotten away and had rebuilt a house and built a church with the money he owned trying tossed like a righteous man.

After the war Pino spent several years I his head thinking what he could have done differently and how he could have been better. in Pino's mind he was a failure but in reality he had helped over four hundred swish refugees escape and he had supplied the Allies with crucial information to end the war. Pino was and avid skier so he began to travel around the world skiing and ended up in Los Angeles, California and marrying a woman and having two kids. after many years Pino moved on from the war and from tis family. After divorcing his wife he moved back to Italy Pino meet another beautiful women and married her. after having his last child Pino still lives in Milan Italy to this day and his story has sparked talk all around the world with the book about his story Beneath A Scarlet Sky .
