PolyVR

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

PolyVR is a free and open-source virtual reality authoring system[1] used for creating virtual environments and deploying them in various hardware setups, from desktop environments over powerwalls to CAVEs. It is developed since 2009 at the Institute for Information Management in Engineering[2], Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

PolyVR is released under the GPLv3 license and is available for Linux.

It features a graphical user interface to dynamically configure complex hardware setups like distributed visualization environments, tracking systems from ART[3] or via the VRPN protokoll. A scene graph viewer and a scripting editor allow to dynamically author complex virtual environments. The scripting languages are python, which grants access to many build-in modules and functionalities, GLSL to write shaders, and HTML to write websites. PolyVR has its own web server which allows to host own websites, as well as embed websites in the virtual world as interactive textures. This allows to quickly develop 2D content like UIs and to place them on any 3D surface in the virtual environment. PolyVR comes with a broad range of modules that allow to create a vast array of applications, from virtual reality games to scientific visualisation, but the main focus is to support the development of engineering applications, especially mechanical engineering, product development, production planning, training and planning applications.
