Porgy and Bess is an upcoming musical film written and directed by Dee Rees. It is based on the opera of the same name by George Gershwin, which itself was an adaptation of the novel Porgy by DuBose Heyward.

A disabled beggar tries to save a woman he’s fallen for from her abusive partner.
Production[edit]
It was announced in February 2020, after Michael Cimino[1] and Spike Lee expressed interest in directing a remake of Porgy and Bess,[2] Dee Rees was set to write and direct a new film adaptation of the opera, following the 1959 film directed by Otto Preminger with Charles and Irwin Winkler producing the remake, with the latter having been trying to bring together a new adaptation of the opera since 1986.[3]
