Premio Contacto Banxico

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Premio Contacto Banxico (or Contact Banxico Prize) is an annual contest sponsored by Banco de México, Mexico’s central bank, aimed at the nation’s high-school-level students, with the stated intention of motivating teachers and students to study the objectives and operations of Banco de México. Since the contest was launched in 2009, more than 2,000 schools have participated.

Contest aims

The competition has three stated objectives: To serve as a tool for outreach from Banco de México to society; to motivate teachers and students to study the objectives and operations of Banco de México; and to motivate schools, teachers and students to use materials developed by Banco de México explaining its role in the economy.

Structure

Participants form teams of four students and one teacher, all from the same school. The teacher offers advice in the development of a written report or a video on an economic subject announced at each year´s contest launch. Teams register via a web portal, through which each team receives a folio number that identifies them and allows their work to be evaluated anonymously. They answer a questionnaire on economic and central banking subjects.

Each team is given a grade on the questionnaire, made available in their account via the portal. The team is then given the option to send in its work through the portal. The system captures and orders the 150 entries of the teams with the highest grades on the questionnaire. These entries are sent to the jury, made up of 15 members, seven from Banco de México and eight from other organizations.

Each entry is reviewed by two members of the jury, and an average is taken of the two scores given. On the basis of the averages, the 10 best entries are chosen. These 10 entries are again reviewed, this time by all jury members, who select the five finalists.

The finalists visit Mexico City and participate in various planned activities, usually during a week toward the end of the year. They present their work in front of the jury in the morning of the awards date. An awards ceremony is given in the evening at Mexico City’s Interactive Economics Museum (Museo Interactivo de Economía or MIDE in Spanish), where the winners are announced. The first-place winners present their work to the public and a reception is offered.

In 2017, the first-place team received 120,000 pesos, the second-place team, 90,000 pesos, and the third-place team, 60,000 pesos. The 2018 contest calls for work on the subject “Central bank autonomy: How does it contribute to keeping inflation low and stable?” Two entry categories are available: Written work or video/animation.

Data

Since the 2009 launch, more than 10,000 teams have registered in the contest, or more than 50,000 people, including students and teachers. More than 2,000 schools have participated. All Mexican states have had participating schools.
