A high-tech agricultural demonstrational zone will be part of the smart city near Elin Pelin

The project will be realised as part of the 16+1 initiative

High-tech farms and experimental fields will be built as part of St. Sofia smart city project near Elin Pelin. This resolution is part of the strategic three-part agreement that was signed at the 16+1 summit in the presence of the Prime Ministers of the 17 countries.

The Seventh Summit of the government leaders of China and the countries from Eastern and Central Europe became the scene for the signing of an agreement between Capital Concept Limited, represented by Dr. Albert Hung Chao Hong– Vice-president, China State Construction Engineering Corporation Ltd., represented by Mr Caikun Tang, Deputy General Manager., and Mr Vasil Gelev, Executive Director of the Association for the Promotion of Agricultural Cooperation between China and CEE Countries. Apart from confirming the development of the high-tech agricultural demonstrational zone, the agreement also assigns all construction operations to the China State Construction company.

The demonstrational zone in the future smart city will be used to grow and breed new and traditional strains of agricultural products, develop new processing techniques and share practices in the field of agricultural science. One of the zone’s purposes would be to contribute for the historical, cultural and touristic exchanges between Bulgaria, the rest of the countries from Central and Eastern Europe, and China. In order to achieve this, among the new CBD area, there will be 17 demonstrational buildings, where the first floors would accommodate national pavilions, which would display agricultural and other products that are typical for each of the 16+1 countries. The rest of the floors within the buildings would be dedicated for informational centres, investment consultants, and tourism agencies.

The St. Sofia project would encompass a modern congress and exhibition centre, as well as first-class recreational and business spaces. The congress halls would host forums for any of the 17 countries, the exhibition halls would continuously hold expositions, theme months for the countries involved and folklore festivals. The aim is to light up every guest’s interest, so as to make them want to visit each of the countries. A key accent would fall on culinary tourism – the venues will offer special “16+1” menus and traditional dishes, cooked by chefs from different countries. All products would be sourced from certified Chinese and CEE producers, who would have been initially pre-selected at the demonstrational zones.
