Promescent, formerly G&H Brands, is a company known for its sexual health products, including male genital desensitizers, personal lubricants, and condoms. It is owned by Absorption Pharmaceuticals in the US. A variety of over-the-counter drugs (OTC), 510(k) medical devices, and other topical ointments are produced under the Promescent brand.[1]

Overview[edit]

Promescent is most well-known for its male genital desensitizer, commonly referred to as “Delay Spray”.[2] Delay Sprays use lidocaine, prilocaine, or benzocaine and are applied as a topical to the underside of the head of the penis to increase the time to ejaculation in men who experience premature ejaculation.[3][4]

The name is a portmanteau of prolong and tumescent. Tumescent means “swollen or distended with fluid, as of erectile tissue.”[5]

Promescent launched in 2009 under G&H Brands. The company name was changed to Absorption Pharmaceuticals during a rebrand in 2011.

History[edit]

Promescent was created by Dr. Ronald F. Gilbert, former chief of the Department of Urology at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, California, and assistant clinical professor of urology at University of California-Irvine School of Medicine, in 2009.[6]

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office approved patents to Absorption Pharmaceuticals related to Promescent. The patents cover eutectic formulations with lidocaine as the primary ingredient that allows for increased absorption of anesthetic compounds via skin.[7][8][9]

Patent No. Issue date Description
8,507,561 Aug 13, 2013 Formula application
8,563,616 Oct 22, 2013 Composition of lidocaine-only eutectic formula
8,637,577 Jan 28, 2014 Additional eutectic formulations

In 2021, Promescent Organic Aloe Lubricant and Promescent Delay Spray won Best Adult Lube Brand and Best Adult Performance Enhancer, respectively, by ASN Lifestyle Magazine at their 2021 ASN Awards.[10]

Research[edit]

A study published in the International Journal of Impotence Research proved Promescent’s Delay Spray effectiveness among participants:[11]

  • Average estimated ejaculatory latency was 11.16 minutes during product usage compared to 6.81 when the product was not used.
  • During product usage, participants reported that both partners experienced orgasm 65.6% of the time compared to 44.1% when the product was not used.
  • A majority of participants (57.8%) indicated use of the product did not interrupt the sexual experience, with 25% indicating it interrupted a little bit, 13.7% indicating it somewhat interrupted, and only 3.5% indicating it very much interrupted the sexual experience.

Controversies[edit]

In February 2017, Absorption Pharmaceuticals sued Reckitt Benckiser after Reckitt launched Duration, an OTC premature ejaculation spray, through their K-Y brand.[12] Absorption had been in negotiations to be acquired by Reckitt and in the process had divulged sales information, market data, and samples of Promescent to Reckitt. After negotiations failed, Reckitt brought Duration to market. Absorption’s lawsuit claimed Reckitt "intentionally misrepresented or concealed material facts from Absorption to induce Absorption to divulge its proprietary information" and was entitled to trade-secret protection.[13] In June 2022, a jury ruled that Absorption Pharmaceuticals did not prove that the information provided by the company to Reckitt was trade-secret protected. The jury also ruled that Reckitt did not engage in fraud.[14][15]
