Pure Planet (energy company)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Pure Planet is a renewable energy supply company based in Bristol, England. Pure Planet sells renewable electricity and carbon-offset gas to domestic properties throughout Great Britain. The company was co-founded by Andrew Ralston, Chris Alliott, Steven Day and Tom Alexander in 2016.[1] BP P.L.C., the British multinational oil and gas company, has a minority shareholding in the company.[2]

Overview[edit]

Pure Planet guarantees that the electricity it supplies comes from 100 percent renewable sources.[3] They are one of several independent energy companies challenging the Big 6 energy suppliers in Great Britain. At its launch in 2017, it started to supply its members with energy at a wholesale price.[4] It offers one tariff to customers on either a single fuel (electricity) or dual fuel (gas and electricity) basis. The company's claim to 100% carbon offset gas has been certified by Ofgem.[5]

Founders[edit]

Pure Planet was founded by Andrew Ralston, Chris Alliott, Steven Day and Tom Alexander, a team of entrepreneurs with a background in telecommunications. The team were responsible for the launch of Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Mobile in 1999.[3] For their running of the company, The Telegraph credited the team, in particularly Tom Alexander - who was chief executive officer at Virgin Mobile - with ‘democratising’ the mobile phone sector.[1] The team went on to run Orange which they merged with T-Mobile in 2009 to form EE in 2012.[4] [5]

In 2017 Steven Day gave a TED Talk at TEDx Brighton called 'One Lonely Thought'[6] the subject of whether Britain could become a carbon-neutral country by adopting renewable energy.

Membership model[edit]

Pure Planet customers, which the company calls members, are supplied with energy at its wholesale price. Under the membership model, customers pay a £10 membership fee per fuel, which covers the company’s margin and the standing charge.[7]

Digital customer service[edit]

Pure Planet is a completely energy supply company in Britain where customers set up and manage their account entirely through a mobile phone app.[8][9] The app was developed by Rocketmakers and is compatible with iOS and Android devices. The app features an AI robot called ‘WattBot’ which handles customer queries. Alternatively, customers can direct their inquiries to a forum page on its official website titled ‘Community’.[10]

Parental leave[edit]

In April 2018 Pure Planet became one of a small number of employers in the UK to afford all employees equal parental leave, giving new fathers the same 52 week leave entitlement as new mothers. The policy mirrored that introduced by Aviva, the UK's biggest insurer. The

Position on price-caps[edit]

Pure Planet spoke out against the proposed introduction of price caps in the British energy market ahead of the 2017 General Election. Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Andrew Ralston said: “The way to bring about a much needed modernisation of the industry is to allow new companies with fresh ideas to flourish in a free market."[11]
